Put it like this: Unlike in the US, you cannot walk into such jobs without significant experience in the UK due to the numerous checks employers carry out here. There are companies here promising SEO this and that but to be honest, reputable companies steer well clear of such companies because most know they are (at best) getting a green grad (and at worst, a grad who may have a sports-based degree); and most just aren’t interested.
They want real people with REAL experience.
In the UK, SEO positions usually have to be earned. Certainly in the Civil Service, you cannot walk into a SEO post. You have to have a degree ( a good one) AND you have to have relevant experience. Besides this, you have to beat off competition from THOUSANDS of better qualified Civil Servants. Most can’t… If you don’t have these things, you have to have been in the foodchain for YEARS and worked your way up. I did this (did my degrees whilst working) and it took me 11 years to earn my SEO…
Any company that promises a SEO position overnight is promising snake oil. I have been a SEO for five years; I have made successful bids for BILLIONS and I have a MBA and a BA (both with distinction) and, despite being very good at what I do and earning top reports, I am struggling to move on and do other things. Any extravagent promises are just that – promises. But believe me, once these companies have your money, they will NOT deliver anything.
My experience.
Far better to aim lower and work your way up the chain through demonstration of competence. Trust me – this is the only way to get anywhere in the British job market. We check EVERYTHING these days and qualifications from certain establishments are always checked. Not saying I have flakey qualifications (I don’t!) but being realistic worked for me after years of trying shortcuts.
Trust me: they do not work.
